Seasonal Decor Updates-Spring Kitchen

Seasonal Decor Updates-Spring Kitchen

I like to mix things up around the Hive every now and again and I feel like the changing seasons and holidays are the perfect opportunity to refresh my decor and update it with fun new pieces.  Today I'm sharing what I do in my kitchen for the spring season.

One of my favorite places to decorate seasonally is my dinning room table.  I usually stick with a few basics that are always in place, like the galvanized metal tray, the burlap runner, and my grandma's vintage cookbook. Then I like to add some seasonal or holiday accents.  To give you an idea of what I mean, here is my basic, everyday tablescape.

Here is how I changed it up for spring this year.  I just added the little birds nest and eggs, changed out the twigs for pussy willows and switched the salt and pepper shakers for little bunnies.  This was a super simple, and inexpensive update.

For this Christmas tablescape, I changed basically everything but the runner and tray.

Hopefully this gives you some inspiration for making some small seasonal changes in your home. It's easy to add a little something now and then and have a little fun with your everyday decor.

Sweet and Inexpensive Mother's Day Gift Idea

Sweet and Inexpensive Mother's Day Gift Idea

If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with anything miniature.  Obsessed!  So imagine the excitement I felt the other day when I was in the Hobby Lobby party isle and I ran across the cutest little easels and tiny canvases.  I had to have them and I immediately knew what they would be perfect for.  At $4.99 for the package of 4 wooden easels and $4.99 for the package of 4 little canvases (even cheaper if you use your 40% off coupon) they make the perfect inexpensive Mother's Day present!  Moms love gifts that are from the heart.  Something that our child made is more precious to us than anything we can buy at a store.  Dads, if you're reading this, and I know many of you are, (just kidding).  Round up the kiddos, break out the paint and paint brushes and have them create a masterpiece just for mom.  Trust me, she'll love it!

Decorating with Meaning- 10 Beautiful Pieces of Art

The art you display in your home is a very personal and meaningful choice.  Each of us are drawn to different art for different reasons.  You don't need to spend a lot of money on an original oil painting to have a beautiful piece of meaningful art. There are many online sources that have made it easy to personalize your space with artwork you love.  You may be looking for something to remind you of a favorite vacation spot, or you may want to display a religious piece of art, or a favorite quote.  Even beautiful family photos make beautiful art.  For a meaningful home, find art that touches you.  Something that you find beautiful and enjoy looking at.  Here are some of my current favorites.

Decorating with Meaning-Collections

I love collecting things that make me happy!  Collections can be great to display throughout your home as small groupings.  The picture above shows a few of the cake plates from my cake plate collection.  You don't have to display your whole collection at once, I have many more vintage cake plates that I display in my office.  I just choose a few here and there to display together in other places in my home.  I like to change it up and keep things fresh and new.

Behind the cake plates in this picture is another meaningful piece I have.  The salvaged wood distressed artwork was a gift that my dad made for me based on one sold in Pottery Barn.  It is amazing!

Another collection I have is my vintage Nancy Drew books.  I LOVE Nancy Drew books!  They are so nostalgic to me.  When I was a young girl I was obsessed with Nancy Drew and read most of them.  I didn't really own any when I was younger, I always checked them out at the library.  I recently saw some for sale at a vintage store, and I was hooked!  I know it's a quirky little collection, but I love it and it makes me happy!  Like the cake plates, I don't display them all, just the yellow ones. (Did you know that the really old originals were bound in blue cloth?  Just a little Nancy Drew trivia for you.)

In front of my glorious Nancy Drew collection I've displayed a vintage LDS sacrament tray.  I love all the little silver cups.  The trays all stack up neatly in a cool silver carrying case.  I find these fascinating.

Collections you love can become such a fun hobby.  I hope this little peek at some of my collections helps spark your interest in displaying collections you love!

Decorating with Meaning

Decorating with Meaning

My number one piece of home decorating advice is to surround yourself with things you love.  Whether it is the colors you love, things you love to collect, or things that are meaningful and have a history.  There are so many ways to add  pieces throughout your house that make you happy.  If you start by surrounding yourself with things that you love, your home will become a refection of you and you will love being there.

The picture above shows how I've displayed an old handwritten recipe card written by my sweet little grandma.  It makes me happy each time I see it. I love her familiar handwriting and the fact that the recipe is for beet relish.  I wanted to fit the small recipe card in a  5x7 frame I found so I added burlap behind it.  I love that it gives it a little texture and makes it more rustic.  I also felt like the cute red strawberries would pop more with a little extra color so I used washi tape to tape the card to the burlap.  So simple!

This week I'm focusing on things I love in my home. I have many "obsessions" and collections of things I love, so it's not going to be easy to narrow them down.  Hopefully showing how you how I incorporate things that make me happy into my home will give you inspiration to do the same.  I'd love to see what you are doing in your homes with things that you love!  Share your pictures with this week on instagram at #ohhhomelove (our humble hive home love).
